Bob Hartzell
If you frequent bars or coffee shops in the
city of Chicago, then you have probably seen one of Bob Hartzell's "Light Sculptures": dowel rod and
balsa wood frames bound together with wire, string, and cable ties which are covered in layers of
painted tissue paper and illuminated from within.
After moving to Chicago from Missouri nine years ago, Bob
held a series of commercial and industrial freelance art positions, ranging from cell-paining Capt'n Crunch
commercials to darkroom work for a variety of tobacco products. Driven more by fiscal pressures than
high idealism, Bob left the professional world and has been making a meager living as a working artist.
Bob is a designer and printer at the highly respected SCREWBALL PRESS
co-op, where he hand-prints limited edition silkscreen posters for rock bands, theater groups,
and anyone else who can actually get him on the phone. Bob is also the long-time lighting director
at the famous Chicago rock venue, LOUNGE AX.
Bob's work has been shown at the Lincoln Tap Room, the Empty Bottle, Kite Show '96
Wood Street Gallery, Around the Coyote '95 and '96, the Lounge Ax, the Rainbow Room, Uncommon Ground,
Augenblick, Danny's, Beat Kitchen, and Higher Ground.
